Similar Films/Storylines

A main focus on the storyline for our trailer is the loyalty between Jack and his dog,
because he has no body else. We want to portray this relationship to show the strength of it.
Some other films also display this kind of relationship.

I am legend - a man goes to an evacuted city to try and find the cure for cancer
and save lives. He's on his own throughout the mission other than his dog who
is his only friend and guidance throughout the film until it dies.

In Marley and Me, the couple have the dog right from when he is a puppy and
watch his whole life, the man therefore forms a strong bond with the dog
and it is very emotional watching the great friendship come to an end.

Shots That Inspired Us

Here are a few example of shots that we felt were most effective. The style both these movies capture (Fish Tank and Kidulthood) is something that we aspire to create in our film trailer.

The Streets

The Streets capture urban life in a completely unique way. Their music is based around a young man and the different situations he faces in his life. The music videos they create are a realistic in terms of the area he lives which is portrayed particularly well in their video Lets Push Things Forward. This is something we would like to take from their videos.

Another aspect The Streets focus on in their Dry Your Eyes music video is Mike Skinners (lead) relationship with his dog. In our trailer the protagonist has a dog who proves to be the most loyal character. In this video the dog is by his side in most shots. We wanted to incorporate this in our trailer to show the dogs loyalty to our protagonist.

The Streets Album cover inspiration

This is the album cover for The streets first album. We liked this picture as it shows a london council block of flats which relates to social realism and also relates to our film as we are basing it in the back streets of london.

We also liked how the bands logo is on a lighter as it relates to smoking. It is a sterotypical view that teenagers from areas such as council estates smoke, as it highlights their rebelious nature. This again relates to our theme and genre.

This is the second album from the streets. We particulary liked this at it shows the main singer/raper from the band waiting at a bus stop. We thought this related well with our film as in our trailer we are including alot of shots of our main character waiting, for example the long shot of him and his dog at a train station. Showing how his life has no straight direction.

We also liked the strapline on the album cover 'a grand dont come for free' as it relates to money which our main character strives to get.

This is the third album cover. The main raper from the band is again waiting, this time in front of a rolls royce which shows stereotypical britain. The man is wearing trainers and jeans and overall looks chavy, contrasting to the expensive car. We liked the fact that he is again waiting as it relates to our main character.
We liked the strapline  'the hardest way to make an easy living' as it suggests a struggle towards living a good life, which is an issue our main character battles with.

This is the fourth album cover and is very different from the others. The waterfall and simpleness of the picture gives a sense of freedom and is relaxing to look at. We also think it gives a sense of being lost which we thought described our main character well as he is trapped in a world of drugs and violence which is a struggle for him to get out of as he has no money or family, therefore is lost in his own life.

This is The Streets final album cover. It contrasts hugely with their first album cover of the  grubby looking council flats as the flats shown in this cover appear to be expensive and attractive. As this is their last album cover it could highlight the success of the band and show that they now have money. We liked the contrast from the poor, run down flats to this as it shows that in some situations your life can change for the better, which is what we  want for our main character.

When looking at the streets album covers from start to finish we realised they almost tell a story. They show how the band has gone through a struggle to get to the successful stage they are now at.

Harry Brown

We felt that the portrayal of a council estate or tower block in Harry Brown was very realistic. We wanted to recreate something similar in our trailer to keep the social realism element prominant throughout.

Location Inspiration

This shot is of a block of council flats in London from the film Fish Tank.
We liked the idea of council flats as it sets the scene of the back streets and rougher side of London
as the flats are not well kept or particularly nice to look at.
We also thought that the low angle shot was effective as it makes the flats look daunting and intimidating.

This shot is from the film Adulthood and is also of council flats.
We felt that this particular shot of the flats was effective as the view puts into perspective
how big London is and therefore gives the message that it would be easy to
get lost into the gang culture world. Again we felt the flats set the scene of a rougher side of London.

This shot is also from Adulthood. We liked the council flats being shown in the dark as it makes them
look more intimidating.
