FINAL TRAILER

FINAL WEBSITE

Our wix website, the movie homepage http://www.wix.com/emmalock1/jackmiller#!

FINAL POSTER

This was our final poster. We chose this because the landscape in the background is more typically working class britain and so gives audiences more of a feel of the genre.

Title

We had a poll to get feedback about possible titles for the film and help us decide which one suited best. 'Knives and Forks' recieved the most votes, however after further research we decided to keep 'Jack Miller' because it suited the genre more than 'Knives and Forks' which could be perceived as a horror upon first hearing. But, with a name like 'Jack Miller' which has a british, 'laddish' sound to it we felt it fitted our trailer better and gave connotations to the protagonists personality by the stereotypical 'Jack the Lad.'

Location inspiration

This shot is of a block of council flats in London from the film Fish Tank.
We liked the idea of council flats as it sets the scene of the back streets and rougher side of London
as the flats are not well kept or particularly nice to look at.
We also thought that the low angle shot was effective as it makes the flats look daunting and intimidating.

This shot is from the film Adulthood and is also of council flats.
We felt that this particular shot of the flats was effective as the view puts into perspective
how big London is and therefore gives the message that it would be easy to
get lost into the gang culture world. Again we felt the flats set the scene of a rougher side of London.

This shot is also from Adulthood. We liked the council flats being shown in the dark as it makes them
look more intimidating.

Sound

Our final decision for sound which you can hear on our trailer;
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ya_pwvNCQnI

was chosen because of its slow build up creating tension but also fast paced to show Jacks lifestyle and the gangsta side to the genre. We then blended it into another track which was much more snappy and 'dangerous' sounding to portray Jacks life becoming more thrilling and hectic.

ACTOR CHANGES

Due to our current actor playing the protagonist Jack Miller moving abroad we had to find another actor to play the role. We wanted the actor to look the part and therefore decided to use a boy with spikey black hair and confidence to pull off Jack's gangster personality traits.

SHOT DECONSTRUCTION

  1. We used Revolver entertainment as our indent because after research into the different idents we found that films similar to ours and ones that inspired us such as ‘Kidulthood’ and ‘The Veteran’ are produced by them. We felt that it would give it the social realism edge right from the beginning.
  2. The shot filmed from the train which shows an establishing shot of London was used to set the scene and start the journey of Jack Millers life. It instantly creates the urban culture of the trailer.
  3. We decided to add in text that says ‘sometimes in life your choices are made for you’ to give an insight into the narrative and show that Jack Miller did not have a choice in what direction his life was lead in.
  4. The first long shot of Jack entering the tunnel was used to display this part of his life beginning, entering the tunnel as if he is entering this stage of his life. It also shows the graffiti in the tunnel showing the gang culture and as well as this, it is the first time you see Jacks Dog, showing the friendship between them as they enter this stage together.
  5. We decided to add that is was ‘by the makers of trainspotting’ because this gives the audience an idea of the genre of our teaser trailer as ‘trainspotting’ is also a british social realism. This means the audience can relate to other films and inspire them to watch it.
  6. The establishing shot of London was used to set the scene in central London.
  7. The long shot of Jack and his dog sitting across the platform is meant to portray that he is always waiting for something to happen as his life is in no set direction. This helps the audience sympathise with him.
  8. We used the mid shot of Jack and the dog on the bench, again waiting for nothing, because it shows the bond between them as she moves in closer to him and he is stroking her showing his loyalty and affection.
  9. The close up side view of his face shows his expression and makes the audience again feel sympathetic. The way this is prolonged creates the image of sadness.
  10.  The mid shot of the two at the bus stop was inspired by ‘The Streets’ album cover. It shows the working-class Britain and the culture Jack is around. It also again shows his waiting and lack of path.
  11. The close up of the pair asleep shows the bond between them and the isolation the two find themselves in, they only have each other and they don’t have a home but this brings them closer.
  12. The extreme close up and high angle of the dogs face shows she is fed up of the life they are currently living and also shows her loyalty to Jack and gives the audience a feeling of sympathy.
  13. The close up of Jack taking change out of his pocket, later contrasted by him counting notes, is used to show his poverty at the beginning of his story and again feel sympathy.
  14.  The mid shot of the dog jumping onto his owner Jack shows the friendship and love between them and shows them play fighting, and the playful nature. Also displays that the dog has a boisterous side as well, showing the codes and conventions of a social realism as a ‘status dog.’

Similar Films/Storylines

A main focus on the storyline for our trailer is the loyalty between Jack and his dog, because he has no body else. We want to portray this relationship to show the strength of it. Some other films also display this kind of relationship.
Hachiko - the film is based on the loyalty between the man and his best friend Hachi, the dog follows him to the station everyday and then returns in the evening and walks with him home.

I am legend - a man goes to an evacuted city to try and find the cure for cancer and save lives. He's on his own throughout the mission other than his dog who is his only friend and guidance throughout the film until it dies.

In Marley and Me, the couple have the dog right from when he is a puppy and watch his whole life, the man therefore forms a strong bond with the dog and it is very emotional watching the great friendship come to an end.

Poster 2

The dog is again iconic here. This time we have added Jack in the
poster as well, showing the friendship and the relationship between them.
the dark location with lights shows his culture, and the train platform represents
the image we are trying to give of his lifestyle. This is like the Streets Album cover.

poster 1

This poster is very iconic with the dog in the foreground, representing loyalty as well as violence as the breed is a 'status dog.' The houses in the background represent Britain. The typography is urban looking, it looks rough and dirty which portrays the personality of the protagonist, as well as other boys in the trailer.

Outfit 2

We decided to challenge the codes and conventions of this genre. Typically, a teenage, troublesome boy would be in tracksuits and a hoody. We wanted to go against this stereotype and show that those kind of youths are not the only ones who can get into trouble and find no way out. So to do this we put our protagonist in skinny jeans and a bright coloured hoody (rather than typical white, grey or black) which is tied at the neck. This gives him more of an alternative look.

Second Day Filming

For the rest of our shots we needed to be in London. We met our actor up there and got all the shots we needed succesfully with the right weather and the right lighting (almost dark.) We were pleased with this day. We still however need to go back up to London to get some more establishing shots and re-do some to a better quality.

Inspired Shots from Kidulthood

First Day Filming

Our first day of filming was in our local area as we did not need any iconic images for these shots, it was in the evening so that it was dark but it was also raining. this caused us some difficulties because rain drops kept getting in the screen and we did not want to ruin the camera. However, we managed to get some decent shots for our trailer.
